Sound
Abatement - University of Houston Recreation Center, Houston, Texas

Background
In September 2001, the Stone Curtis Group was hired to provide an insulation solution for noise problem at the University of Houston.

Challenge
The bookstore is located above the recreation center. The noise from the pool tables, bowling lanes, and video games could be heard in the bookstore and disrupted the peaceful environment sought by those shopping in the store.

Solution Results
Stone Curtis quickly identified that the numerous cracks, crevices, and penetrations in the recreation center ceiling were providing access for airborne sound to travel into the bookstore. To block the passages and control sound transmission, Icynene® was sprayed directly onto the ceiling of the recreation center. No special treatment or cleaning of the ceiling was required because of Icynene®'s tenacious adhesion properties.
After the installation of Icynene®, there was an immediate and significant sound reduction in the bookstores. Shoppers at the University of Houston's bookstore now have an environment conducive to the enjoyment of books.
