| HVAC Rightsizing Achieved with Icynene® Installing Icynene in a home offers the opportunity for dramatic improvements in energy efficiency & comfort. By eliminating air leakage, Icynene® changes both the way that homes fundamentally perform, and the demands that the home places on the HVAC system. Because each house is different (variations in climate, orientation, window areas, etc.), it is impossible to use rule-of-thumb procedures to determine the new heating & cooling loads. Instead, it is more important to understand how the use of Icynene changes how the house performs, and then allow an HVAC design software package to calculate the loads for you. Increased Performance Installing Icynene® into a building can reduce the size of the mechanical system as well as heating & cooling load requirements. This improved performance can be entirely attributed to the fact that Icynene® is a combined air barrier and insulation system. Blower Door diagnostic air leakage test results for residential buildings insulated & air-sealed with Icynene® regularly test at less than 1.5 Air Changes per Hour (ACH) @ 50 Pa of pressure (ACH50). When converted to leakage rates based on natural pressures, houses insulated with Icynene® typically range from 0.05 ACH to 0.1 ACH at natural pressures (ACHnat). This result is significantly better than conventionally constructed homes that often test at 5 to 7 ACH50, or 0.6 – 0.7 ACHnat. | ||||
