Energy Savings in Hubbard, IA

Background:
In April 2005, Jack and Sandy Miller began construction of their new home in Hubbard, Iowa – a rural community about 50 miles northeast of Des Moines. With the help of their builder, they designed a 1350 ft2 Morton-style home attached to a 2350 ft2 machine shed. Construction was completed throughout the summer and the Millers moved into their new home on October 1, 2005.

Challenge:
In selecting materials for the home, the Millers took into consideration Iowa's continental climate. Due to extremes in hot and cold temperatures, they had used 1500 gallons of liquid propane to heat their previous 2600 ft2 home the year before, in addition to the cost of heating their hot water with electricity. A top consideration for this new home was to minimize energy consumption and lower their utility bills.

After exploring several options for insulation, the Millers decided to have Icynene® spray foam insulation and air barrier material installed by Prairie Foam Insulators of Huxley, IA. Icynene® was sprayed into the 10' walls, the gables, and the 14' cathedral ceiling of the post-framed pre-engineered wood building.

Results:
By air-sealing the home, Icynene® helped keep indoor temperatures more comfortable throughout the year. During the epic blizzard of February 2007, the Millers lost power in the home for four days. However, Icynene® held the warm air inside so that, by the end of the fourth day the temperature had only dropped nine degrees, from 65 to 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Each night, the Millers had used a one-pound propane tank (similar to what you would use while camping) to run a very small heater, and that actually warmed up the entire house by two degrees!

Icynene® also succeeded in helping the Millers save money on their utility bills. During the first year in their new home, they consumed one-third the amount of energy they had the year before - using just 500 gallons of liquid propane to heat their home and all of their domestic hot water!

Homeowner, Jack Miller, had this to say: “Icynene® does what it says it will - it paid for itself in one year. I would recommend Icynene® to anyone.”
